FACT: At the dinner table, Julie is told that it is earlier in Columbus, where Harriet is calling from, than where she lives in New York. In fact both cities are in the same Eastern Standard Time Zone. In the book, Harriet is calling from Milwaukee in the Central Time Zone, which is correct. However, when the screenplay changed her location to Columbus, the writer failed to realize this fact and change the dialog or the city. FACT: At one point Chris Schenkel mentions the “red and white” ! in reference to Ohio State. Anyone who was ever near Columbus (or followed the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry) knows that the colors are “scarlet and gray”. (The incorrect “red/white” reference to the Ohio State Buckeyes comes from Philip Roth’s book itself; see in Chapter 7, page 104, line 7 from the top [Houghton Mifflin Co. edition, 1959].) FAKE: In a scene where Mr. Chips is climbing a mountain in his attempt to “rescue” Kathy, he passes by a cross marking the spot where someone died that is written in English. He is in the Alps of Austria, however, so the sign should be in German. DATE: In the scene that opens with the title “Idlewild Airport, 1963″, Henry is leaning on a 1965 Chevy Impala. DATE: Henry and others are outside Idlewild Airport in 1963, and overhead a Boeing 747 is landing/taking off. 747s had their first test flights in 1969, entering service in 1970. BOOM: Shadow in Henry’s house when he is talking with Marie about the Lufthansa heist. CONT: When Karen is ! holding a gun in Henry’s face, a different gun is used for clo! se-up an d long shots. Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. FAIR: SPOILER: “Tropic Blunder” could have been a documentary, since it was about the making of the film. Therefore! , Tugg would have been ineligible for a Best Actor Oscar, since he was just telling his own story in the documentary. However, it is more likely that Tropic Blunder is actually a fictional account of the making of the film, with Tugg appearing as himself, and thereby winning the Oscar. FAIR: When Tugg Speedman is standing in the river, and fires his M16 into the air to shut everyone up, a CO2 cartridge is clearly visible protruding from the bottom of the stock, revealing it to be a prop gun. However, this is not a goof: since Tugg is an actor making a movie, of course the gun IS a prop gun, and there is no reason not to depict it as such. CONT: After Les Grossman hangs up on Flaming Dragon, him and Pecker sit down to and talk about what will happen if Tugg is killed, and you see the people in the room start to leave the room, then it cuts back to Les and his assistant nods his head to leave and you can see the people leaving the room again. CONT: Shortly after Cockburn gets! punched in the nose, blood drips down to his chin. Next time ! the came ra show Cockburn, there is no blood on his chin. CHAR: The Vietnamese rebels speak Mandarin Chinese throughout the movie. CONT: When the gang are sitting and talking around the campfire, the rifle leaning on the rock between Alpha and Sandusky appears/disappears between angle shots. FAIR: The north Vietnam flag appear early in the film (the read flag with yellow star). But in South Vietnam, it was not used by the VC. However, the story was that Tayback had been liberated from an NVA (North Vietnamese Army) prison camp, thus it is accurate for them to have a North Vietnamese flag. CHAR: Tran, the child soldier heroin warlord, carries an automatic rifle but wears a bandoleer filled with bullets. Instead, he should be carrying extra magazines, already loaded with bullets. GEOG: During the “Access Hollywood” sequence, the map which appears on screen identifies “North Vietnam” and “South Vietnam”, even though Vietnam is now one country. CONT: When Portnoy is cut down off the wate! r buffalo, and he lands on the ground on his back, the stunt double’s arms are still bound and are above his head. Next shot shows Jack Black’s hands still bound, but are over his chest.

The movie that started it all. Warwick Davis from Willow plays a mean Leprechaun that doesn’t like to play by the rules, and will kill anyone who goes near his gold. A somewhat delusional man named Dan O’Grady brings home the gold from Ireland after he caught the leprechaun, only Leprechaun had followed him and wreaks havoc until Dan locks him in a crate and attempts to burn him, but has a stroke. 10 years later, two people buy the O’Grady’s old house, (they are J.D. and his spoiled daughter Tory), not knowing what is locked in a crate in the basement. Also there are three painters: Nathan, his brother Alex, and Alex’s dim friend Ozzie. That afternoon Ozzie and Alex find the Leprechaun’s gold, and Ozzie accidentally releases Leprechaun from his crate and he goes on a killing spree and terrorizes the four friends, trying to get his missing gold coin back. Finally they learn the only way to destroy it is to go find Dan O’Grady, thi! nking he may know a way. They find him at a rest home, he tells them a four leaf clover is the only way. So now Tory and her friends must find a four leaf clover in a big clover patch before Leprechaun finds them!

After the death of the President, his successor (Kevin Polack) is on the campaign trail to be re-elected. On a stop in Colorado, he is suddenly snowed in and he and his entourage are forced to take shelter in a small diner. Of course, the group completely take over from the diner’s owner (Badja Djola) and his French-Canadian waitress (Clotilde Courau). Also in the diner is a local redneck (Sean Astin) and a married couple. Suddenly, the movie moves into a suspense film as the President learns that Iraq has invaded Kuwait and slaughtered hundreds of American soldiers. Setting up temporary communications, the President announces that he will launch a nuclear attack on Iraq immediately if the country does not withdraw. Iraq reacts that they have 23 nuclear missiles trained on the US that they are ready to launch. Tensions mount with the involved civilians offering a different viewpoint to the President from the normal opinions of his advisors.

CONT: The score on the scoreboard changes inconsistently between shots during the Long Bay/Butte game. FACT: Throughout many of the games you will see that there are many rocks left in the house. The true way of counting score in curling is whoever has the closet rock to the button gets 1 point, then for every other rock that is closer gets another point until an opponent’s rock is closer then any more in the house. During many of the games some houses were left with up to 5 rocks in the house with no opposing rocks. The scores should have been much higher in all the games, most notably in the final game. CREW: Reflected in the security mirror as O-Dog drags the lady into the back room. CONT: Sharif raises his hands to ward off blows, despite them being cuffed behind his back before he was put in the back seat of the police car. CONT: Before the drive-by shooting at the end of the film, Illena’s cousin is seen loading an Uzi machin! e pistol, and when the shooting is about to begin, he aims thi! s gun ou t of the car window. However, when the shooting actually starts, he has changed over to a TEC-9, a completely different type of machine pistol. CONT: Before he beats up Chauncy at Ronnie’s party, Caine asks O-Dog for his gun. O-Dog hands Caine his Glock. However, when the beating starts and Caine is pistol-whipping Chauncy, the gun has become a Beretta 92F. CREW: When Caine gets his car, the camera is reflected in a car window. FACT: In the beginning of the movie, Tat fires off eight rounds from a six-shot revolver. CREW: In the opening scene, the crew is reflected in the mirror over the beer cooler. CREW: In the beginning of the driving scene with A Wax, O-Dog and Caine, the police escort as well as a crew van can be seen following them out the rear window

The machine army continues to drill towards Zion. Within hours, they will overrun the population of the Zionites and lay extinction to human kind. CONT: When Todd falls from the ship to the garbage planet, he alternately holds his left/right side between shots. CONT: There are only supposed to be 17 more Soldiers after the first 3-man team is eliminated but in the end Todd kills a total of 24 soldiers PLOT: They would not pressurize the hold of the P376 for mere scrap metal for the trip to Arcadia 234, yet Sergeant Todd survived what would have been a fairly long trip in a hold with no oxygen. CONT: At the start of the film the C160 is shot down, this is a high wing aircraft. When the troops reach the aircraft it is a low wing DC3. The actress event runs past the single rear tail dragger wheel. FAKE: Sgt. Slaughter has 6 hash marks on his uniform left sleeve and 5 on his right. Should be matched. FAKE: The ! window air conditioner in Sgt. Slaughter’s office has been pul! led from the window and into the set, exposing the rear, so the camera can frame Eustice Clay kneeling in front of it. CONT: At the fair when Bobby Joe throws the stuffed tiger at Sgt. Slaughter it is moving downwards with sound effects of hitting the ground. In the next split second shot Sgt. Slaughter has it tucked neatly under his left arm. FAKE: Toward the end when Eustice is in his dress khaki uniform he has one hash mark on his left sleeve and 2 on his right. They should be equal.

The oceans during the late 1860-92s are no longer safe; many ships have been lost. Sailors have returned to port with stories of a vicious narwhal (a giant whale with a long horn) which sinks their ships. A naturalist, Professor (Pierre) Aronnax, his assistant, Conseil, and a professional whaler, Ned Land, join an US expedition which attempts to unravel the mystery.

The crossed rifle insignia was not adopted by the US army until the year 1876, before this it was a hunter’s horn. FACT: The enlisted soldiers in the film are shown wearing the rectangular Model 1851 belt plate instead of the brass oval “US” belt plate worn by enlisted soldiers. FACT: None of the soldiers is wearing the proper cartridge box which would have been slung over the shoulder and which had a round “Eagle” breastplate. FACT:! When McKendrick, Penny and Major Snow are waiting for the arrival of the DC3 Dakotas, we see a DC3 landing with the markings of the United States Air Force, which was not formed until 1948. During the time period of the film it was still The US Army Air Corps. DATE: Set in 1917, the fashions and cars are contemporary with 1925, when the film was made. FAKE: Then the Woman telling the story is looking at Gabrielle’s case file in the opening of the film, the set behind her is clearly a forced-perspective painted backdrop. CONT: The length of Julian’s cigarette changes dramatically (gets longer and then gets much shorter than he could smoke it down to in the short time between shots) while he’s playing the piano for Vicky in Lermontov’s office. CONT: The candle headpieces burn down faster at some times than at others. CONT: At one point while in the car after taking Lloyd and Caroline hostage, tail lights disappear behind Gus in the rear view window. FACT: In the movie, the c! haracters celebrate St. Lucia’s Day on Christmas Eve, which is! actuall y celebrated on December Thirteenth. Also, according to Swedish custom, only female members of the family are to wear the candle headpieces, not everyone as shown in the movie.

The production of Nosferatu had to deal with a lot of strange things (some crew members disappeared, some died). This movie focuses on the difficult relationship between Murnau, the director, and Schreck, the lead actor.

An English couple (Joanne Whalley and Adrian Dunbar) who are desperate for children adopt two sisters from Canada whose mother had been murdered. When they get back to England, the elder child (brilliantly played by Hannah Lochner, above, with Whalley) throws tantrums and attacks a boy with a pair of scissors. The adoptive mother, however, is a child psychologist whose therapeutic instincts dovetail perfectly with the demands of a thriller. “What if I take her back to Canada to where it happened,” she says. “Maybe it will trigger a memory.” Hmm…

FAKE: Wires attached to one of the flying bats. DATE: This movie is taking place in the year 1925 yet at the end Dr. Phibes plays “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” which was not written until ten years later. The automobiles, the airplane, and film projector (showing the sexy movie) all seem to be models from the 1920s, but the house interiors (including ! the lights around Dr. Phibes’ organ) and clothing appear modern contemporary when the film was made – early 1970s “mod” style. FAKE: ‘Virginia North’ (qv) (Vulnavia) cannot avoid smiling as ‘Vincent Price (I)’ (qv) (Dr. Phibes) dances with her in his lair. The scene is filmed to keep her face concealed most of the time, but if you look closely at her, you can see her face for a moment and it is obvious that she is trying not to laugh at ‘Vincent Price (I)’ (qv)’s deliberately camp performance. CONT: After her initial ballroom dance with Phibes, whereupon he proceeds to lower the cage of bats into the cellar, Vulnavia proceeds up the stairs, only to be seen seconds later downstairs and having undergone a complete wardrobe change as she receives the cage still being lowered. DATE: Seconds after Dr. Kitaj’s arrival at the hangar of the London Aeroplane Club, the contrails of high-flying aircraft can be seen over the left side of the hangar roof. These are not visible on the fi! rst shot of his arrival at the hangar a few seconds before, no! r should these ever have been visible at all, as no high-flying aircraft existed in the 1920s. DATE: In 1925, the UK civilian aircraft did not require the ID lettering modern aircraft do. CONT: After Dr. Longstreet’s death, his maid tells the inspector that she heard someone playing the violin at half past two in the morning, but the scene in which Dr. Phibe’s assistant was seen playing the violin appeared to be filmed in broad daylight. DATE: The Clockwork Band plays “One For My Baby and One More For the Road,” sung by a Frank Sinatra imitator. Though the film takes place in 1925, the song was not written until 1943 and not recorded by Sinatra until 1947. FAKE: When playing the organ, Dr. Phibes’ hand movements almost never match the music we hear. DATE: Though the setting of the movie is in the 1920s, a clockwork music box plays “Elmer’s Tune,” which was not written until 1941.

New York, 1959. Max Bialystock was once the king of Broadway, but now all his shows close on opening night. Things turn around when he’s visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom, who proposes a scheme tailor-made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. No one will be interested in it, so you can pocket the surplus. To this end, they produce a musical called Springtime for Hitler written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken. Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct. Finally, they hire as a lead actress the loopy Swedish bombshell Ulla (whose last name has over 15 syllables). As opening night draws near, what can go wrong? Well, there’s no accounting for taste…

FACT: In the movie, Kruschev’s acceptance of peace contains the line “you and I should not now pull on the ends of the rope in which! you have tied the knot of war, because the harder you and I pull, the tighter the knot will become…” The quote goes on at some length and can be seen in the message coming in over the teletype. The trouble with this is that the quote appeared in Kruschev’s first letter, dated October 26, 1962, in which he proposed the terms of peace. It did not appear in his October 27, 1962 acceptance of the American conciliation terms. DATE: Two shots show the CH-46 tandem rotor helicopter in use. This helicopter did not enter service until 1964. FACT: Although the name of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley is properly spelled in a prop banner during the film, he is referred to as Mayor “Daly” in the closing credits. FACT: In one of the scenes showing the deck of a Soviet cargo ship, Latin (non-Cyrillic) lettering can be seen on the ship. DATE: As we see people watching the President’s address to the nation, the board game “The Inventors” is on a shelf underneath a television. This game wa! s not published until 1974. DATE: Two of the close-up shots of! TV imag es clearly show the vertical phosphor stripes of a Trinitron tube. Trinitron was not introduced by Sony until 1968.
